Time Capsule Ceremony

On Friday, September 20, 2024, in cooperation with the Waukegan Public Schools, the Class of 1974 hosted a ceremony to open a Time Capsule that was burried by the Waukegan High School East Campus Science Fiction class on June 7, 1974.

Students from this class, taught by Mrs. Jeanette Sosinski, worked with other staff and students at the high school to design and create a time capsule that would withstand the test of time. The students and staff  collected a wide range of artifacts, from student work to class schedules to official school documents and much more, that they wished to preserve for the next 50 years. The directions placed on the placque attached to the cap of the Time Capsule indicated it was to be exhumed on June 7, 2024!

Over 75 classmates and community members attended the ceremony amid great anticipation. Classmates Gary Biggers, Jody (Bishop) Cruz, & Barbara (Carnahan) White, who were all students in the Science Fiction class, served as VIP members during the ceremony. Assistance in digging out the Time Capsule and getting it open was provided by classmates Carol Alleman, Everett "Bill" Sheldon, & Ken Isles. After some tense moments and mechanical difficulties, the contents were finally revealed!!  Congratulations Class of 1974, we did it!!

We would also like to thank several members of Waukegan Public Schools, who made this ceremony possible. These members include:

Gerardo Gordillo (Facilitator of HS Communications & Engagement), Nicholas Alatzakis (Chief of Staff, WPS60), Jason Blair (Teacher, English/Language Arts), and several members of the WPS60 Operations Department (Timothy Bryner, LeBaron Moten, Jesse Nickerson, & Anthony Christian)
