Location, Pre-planning, & Initial Excavation

In late August 2024, members of the Class of 1974 Reunion Committee, Carol Alleman and Judy (Justin) Pozdol, met remotely to discuss with several personnel from Waukegan Public Schools Operations Department and Gerardo Gordillo, the WPS 60 Communications & Engagement Facilitator to discuss preliminary steps in exhuming the Time Capsule buried by students in Mrs. Jeannette Sosinski's Science Fiction Class on June 7, 1974. The Time Capsule was located on the south end of Waukegan HS East Campus next to the flagpole near the building known in 1974 as the South Building, but now known as the AOEC Building.

Issues that were discussed included getting clearance from the city regarding any underground connections that might be disturbed during excavation and scheduling a time to conduct a pre-excavation of the site.

About 10 days before the Time Capsule Ceremony, scheduled for Friday, September 20, 2024, Reunion Committee members, Carol Alleman and Everett "Bill" Sheldon, met with Gerardo and members of the WPS 60 Operations Department to document the location and complete the initial excavation as recorded in these photos.
